I know what I am..

I've had a very difficult year and a bit.

I've struggled and wrestled with my heart and my head.

But in the last couple of months I've had an epiphany, if you will.

I know what I am.

It's odd to say - I know myself, but think about it.

So many people struggle with who they are and who they are meant to be.

What fits into the mold... should I fit into a mould...

That doesn't mean I will never change or that I feel I never have to.

I know I have my flaws.

I know I must always change, continually search, explore, discover within myself and everything around me.

Because I have a need to do these things.

I know I get obsessed about something and will wring it till it's dry and leave it carelessly for the next.

I know I'm terrible with money.

That I need to think more before I act or speak.

That I over analyse.

But I guess it's more so that I don't care what other people think or say about me.

That I don't feel I need to change myself for other people.

Opinions do not influence me.

Some of you may think - well.. duh.. how could not know..

That's the thing.. I didn't.

For so long I've been influenced by other people.

Trying to fit into moulds that were never quite right.

Being dictated what was right and wrong.

When really I just needed to follow my heart..

and now I have.. and so here I am.

My Pa was very much into bird watching and apparently this was his favourite bird.

My Nanna & Pa use to watch them on their farm flittering about the garden.

So this tatt would be for him

Band of Skulls

Band of Skulls - East Brunswick Club 4/8/10

On a wet and windy night at the quiet end of Lygon Street Band of Skulls took to the stage for a blistering 1 1/2 our set of heaving heavy rock.

The night for me and my friend didn't start off too well; getting lost trying to find East Brunswick Club & me losing my wallet (and then finding it in a puddle on the road) but once entering the sticky floors of the dark band room I knew I was in for a awesome night.

Fire! Santa, Rosa Fire! were already on stage. A band definitely worth checking out - very similar sound to the Howling Bells.

After their set and quick curtain draw - Band of Skulls took to the stage.

Most of the night then turned into a heady, heavy, head-nodding blur but the BoS seemed to play every song from their album and the crowd loving it - the drunken group behind me finding yelling out "You fucking ROCK!" very amusing even after the 60th time and lead guitarist Russell Marsden very bemused at the crowd singing back every lyric.

Last night was the last date of their tour of Australia, but I recommend checking out their album and seeing them when they're back in the country next, which I hope is very very soon!

Tim Burton Polaroids

I went to the Tim Burton exhibition at ACMI today and was in awe at how talented he is. The exhibit not only has pieces from his films but storyboards, sketches, art works and sculptures.

I couldn't take photos inside the exhibition but outside in Gallery 2 was an exhibition of his polaroids.

I HIGHLY recommend you go see it!!

Pioneers of Photography

Alfred Stieglitz is one of the pioneers of photography - he pretty much campaigned and was part of the movement (pictorialism) that pushed Photography from just being a means of documenting to an actual art form.

His cloud series 'Equivalents' is my favourite. Having a fascination with clouds myself, I love the variation of lights and darks he captures in these photos.

I also love his series of Photographs he took of his lover and artist Georgia O'Keefe.

He called them 'Composites' but I just love the images of her hands.

Currently there is a Alfred Stieglitz exhibition: the lake years on at the Art Gallery of NSW.

But you can also see the spot on Art Nation which aired last night.

Report Writing

Apologies for the lack of posts but I'm currently in the grips of the that time of the year called report writing.

Basically just drop the chocolate at the door and back away slowly.

Many don't realise how stressful a time it is when you're not only marking work, exams but also trying to come up with as many creative ways to write "you're child is a f**kwit" on the report comments.

Because most teacher's cross mark they're reports I have come across a few other teacher's comments that really do tell it how it is...

But even then, we really can't write how we really feel..

So I did a little search and here are some of my fav report comments teacher's wish they could write:

"I would not allow this student to breed."
"Your child has delusions of adequacy."
"Your son is depriving a village somewhere of an idiot."
"Your son sets low personal standards and then consistently fails to achieve them."
"The student has a "full six-pack" but lacks the plastic thing to hold it all together."
"This child has been working with glue too much."
"When your daughter's IQ reaches 50, she should sell."
"The gates are down, the lights are flashing, but the train isn't coming."
"If this student were any more stupid, he'd have to be watered twice a week"
"It's impossible to believe the sperm that created this child beat out 1,000,000 others."

Isn't it horrid when you are the object of whispers and gossip in corners?

What I don't seem to understand is why people feel the need to gossip about things that are none of their business.

I guess it makes them feel better about themselves.

But I particularly LOVE (like a bullet in the head) how people discuss the gossip as if it affects them in some huge way.

I personally hate the fact that those people can't confront that person to clarify if it's true and feel more comfort in gossiping with others and relying on second or third hand gossip.

When you are subjected to dirty looks and whispers in corners it can feel rather lonely.

Gossip can be a horrid thing and so very damaging.

As brutal as it sounds, clearing out those friends who you can see are very negative and live for gossip can be a good thing.

While you can't be a happy shiny person 24 hours a day and sometimes you might feel the need to vent to others....those who live and breathe negativity and gossiping/bitching can be quite toxic to your own well being.

I personally try be as upfront as possible, occasionally I need to vent but I try to never say anything I wouldn't say to their face.

Kerry's adventures in the city

I had a lovely time in the city with my two good friends...

Firstly we went to the Sunday Best Sale @ Captains of Industry in the city.

Lovely wares for sale, ladies and gents dressed in their finest rockabilly wares, rocking blues duo and a little cafe selling sandwiches, coffees and jams.

Next Sunday Best is actually the First Inaugural North Melbourne Ladies Clothes Swap Evening.

I also happened to wonder down Union Lane (in between Collins & Bourke St), as they were respraying new pieces.

I also found a cute little Art gallery near Queen & Bourke Streets which I unfortunately didn't have time to properly check out but I will next time :)

Supernatural

So who doesn't LOVE the Winchester boys?

If you're unfamiliar, basically Supernatural is about two brother who basically fight all things supernatural.

At the moment I'm rewatching Supernatural from the start and one of the best things about the show (other than the two lead character are HOT!) is how witty the dialogue is and full of intertextuality.

So I thought I'd share my favourite quotes from season 1.

Dean (speaking to two FBI agents): No, sir, we were just leaving. Agent Mulder, Agent Scully.

Searching for break up tips

So I've been on the bad end of a break up recently and I thought to cheer myself I'll google some post-break up tips..

Some of the suggestions were quite interesting..

Let it out, then let it go. Vent, cry, tell your friends for the 15th time how he worshipped the adorable curl of your upper lip. If you don't let your emotions out, they'll fester inside, and so will the louse's memory. So allow yourself one last good wallow. Then stop. Need some affection? Get a substitute object to cuddle. A cute puppy can go a long way toward helping you forget a guy who was a dog.

I do like this suggestion and I do have Sookie cat to help

Retrain your heart. You will truly forget your ex once you can literally see him in a new, hunk-free light. It's called creative visualization -- imagining scenes that you want to happen. Close your eyes and remember negative images, like when he had food dribbling off his chin. Racked with rage at his callous behavior? In your mind's eye (only in your mind's eye) make him walk the plank. That should harmlessly blast away those energy-sapping, venomous emotions.

I'm not sure this would work. Plus I think I'm not quite up to this.

Write a relationship profit-and-loss statement. The end of a romance provides a wonderful time to learn about yourself. Look at your assets. For example, the ability to really be there for someone in a crunch. Examine the minuses -- perhaps you were too trusting of someone who hadn't earned it. The bottom line: Analyze what was right and wrong about your old relationship. It will help you forge a much stronger new one.

This is a bit odd - but I can see the therapeutic aspect.

Form a Saturday night club. Weekends are tough for the newly single. Start calling friends early in the week to make plans for the weekend. Have a standing Saturday night date movie or inline skating date. For the volunteer-minded, Saturday night can be a great time to work at a soup kitchen or crisis hotline. And you'll meet others with big hearts and giving spirits.

Good idea, although the way they've written this makes it sound a bit naff

Meet a fascinating woman: yourself. Do the things you've been dying to try or that you'd put on hold because he disapproved of them. Enroll in that acting class, research a new career, take that trip.

Ahh, hmm.. lame?

Beware the rebound hurdle. Just when you thought it was safe to go out with mascara on (no chance of tearstreaks), wham! You're back in love. But try to see this new man for who he is, not as a cure-all. It's like applying balm to a chapped heart -- temporarily soothing, but you don't cure lovesickness by replacing the love object. You've got to really be over your ex before you move on. Which brings us to ...

Yeah I don't think this will happen for me - but it's good advice.

Close the door. Don't fall into yo-yo love. Let it be over. If he keeps calling to say you should give it one more chance, or that he has someone new but wants to stay friends, don't bite. Cut him loose and celebrate the new, improved, I won't-settle-for-anything-less-than-a-great-guy you.

I'm not sure why - it does look very pretty and I'm sure very yummy.

Redecorating

I felt the need to redecorate today and here are some of the results :)

Move my birdcage to the living room onto this cute little table I got from eBay.

Little beaker vitals I bought from Industria in Getrude Street, filled with four leaf clovers, mint and some pretty purple flowers from outside.

Behind are my beautiful Babushkas and my vesper made of soft drink cans (Oxford Shop)

Yes, I do love Babushkas.

Cute swing tag I bought in Sydney Rd that I couldn't part with and the polaroid is of Sookie poking out from under the bed.

Some cute picture frames I got from the local Op shop.
Top pic is a black and white pic of Sam & I kissing on the street. Middle is a drawing by Julia Pott (she has an awesome Etsy page).
Next is some Dutch clogs (the boy has Dutch heritage) and the last two Thaumatropes with beautiful watercolour paintings on them that I got from Hand Held Gallery.

My beautiful printers tray table made by a friends husband who makes them. I try change it around every couple of months. Also my lovely recycled magazine coasters I got for my birthday last year.

Kitchen Shelf. Fan was a Camberwell market find.

Some of my Owls, Ikea containers, picture frames and pretty boxes and wrapping.
Also in the plastic container some cute antique buttons (from the boy's mum)

More Kitchen shelves. Mint in a jug, I found at an Op Shop, one of my many tea pots and tea cups.
Now my place feels refreshed, sometimes even just moving pictures around can refresh a room :)

Makeups

I have a seeming need to collect different makeup and try out the new "light reflecting, lash boosting, photosynthetic" product that's out... I think I'm the makeup industries perfect consumer :)

At the moment I'm trying the cat eye look:

Do Deere is also the creator of Lime Crime cosmetics - which are hard to come by in Australia. Generally I think it's easier to buy her stuff online.

I absolutely love the packaging for Benefit - that 1930-40's style with the pink and black stripes.

I especially love their cheek tint.

I have a thing for cheek tints because, I generally don't like the look of blush, but love how a cheek tint stains your cheeks. I think it's a bit of a snow white complex or something, but I just love that wintery look of stained cheeks and lips.

I was so sad when Clinque stopped making their cheek tint, but have found alternatives with Benefit (benetint) & also Bourjois (rouge hi-tech).

I also love Napoleon eye shadows for the crazy colours and also I LOVE the auto pilot primer!

I honestly swear by this primer - especially if you have sensitive skin like I have.

It just primes the skin ready for makeup and puts a thin veil between your skin and the makeup :)

My last love is a new acquaintance: Covergirl lash blast length. To be perfectly honest though, I think I was mainly suckered in by Drew Barrymore selling the product in those cool black and yellow outfits than anything else. BUT! It does what it says in plumping up lashes and lengthening them - without all those horrid mangy bits I've gotten with other mascaras (even the more expensive branded ones too - not looking at anyone Napoleon..)

Venting

It's getting to that time of year in schools when the teachers get a little cranky and the students get a little cranky.

It's mainly due to the building of pressure to get all the work requirements done, marked, handed back, reports filled, writing of a well constructed comment done all in time for the deadline - END OF TERM!!

(dun dun dunnnnn)

The students get cranky because now they're being dumped with huge work loads and putting up with the tired, stressed and cranky teachers and..

both parties are getting the slightest whiff of holidays...

So in this case a lot of venting occurs.

Now, I do believe in venting mode (for a teacher) whether it is about a student or more often a work colleague is an important practice and should be part of your weekly routine.
In a vent you are able to say whatever you want and use words such as douche as many times as required to completely vent all said angry out.
Venting does work better when doing it to another person, but in an emergency venting; a pillow, beloved pet or stuffed toy will do.

A lot of (especially in my case) hand waving will happen and repetition telling of said events which have angered you in the first place.
Do not resort to physical violence to vent as this will only make your angrier!

Once fully vented, the venter turns into the ventee to allow the other party to vent.
As a teacher this practice must be maintained as no one wants to see a bits of an exploded teacher everywhere...

The things you do..

The things you do for your loved ones.. even if they're the furry four legged kind.
I never quite understood those pet owners that pretty much treated their beloved cat or dog like they were their own child. Nor did I understand why you'd pay astronomical amounts for vet visits, toys and little woolly jumpers!
But honestly - I have now come to the (obvious) realisation that you can't truly understand what lengths you'll go for your furry loved one until you are actually a pet owner yourself.
My beautiful little kitten got quite sick yesterday and I seriously would have done anything to make her better again and probably paid any amount to make that happen.
Both my mind and heart were definitely not at work today, as I constantly fretted and messaged my boyfriend for updates on her status.
Currently she's curled up in a ball on my lap as I type and as I look down at her, my heart swells with relief and love for this tiny one who can't even say I love you back.
But then again I think she does in so many other ways and I couldn't now imagine my life without her :)

Camberwell Market

I'm off to Camberwell Market this Sunday and I'm rather excited.

I haven't been in quite a while and I'm hoping to find some good bargains this time.

In case you don't know Camberwell Market is a fantastic market every Sunday in the target/safeway carpark just off Burke Rd in Camberwell.

The markets are a mix of knick knacks, antiques, second hand clothes, shoes, jewellery etc.

I have ALWAYS found something at the markets and I've even had a stall their too :)

Obus and other fine clothes

I'm not really a label person - I prefer Op Shops to shopping centres.
But by chance - buying a pair of these fabulous shorts at a stall at the Camberwell Market, that I happened upon the label Obus.
Beautiful and slightly interesting designed clothes - definitely not your factory line, everyone looks the same styled clothing.
They're actually an Australian (Melbourne based even!) young brand, and while a little on the pricey side (a lot of tops/dress are at about the $100-200 mark).
They are beautifully made ;)

A more well know label I also like is Gorman.

Again I always seem to happen upon these labels when someone else is selling them as second-hand.

Also Australian and also a little pricey BUT beautifully made - Gorman uses quite a lot of bright colours which I think appeals to me the most.

Again the designs are a little funky and different :)

Another one - which is also cute and I can't afford, is Life with Bird.

This one I "found" accidentally through an eBay search.

I think with all these brands they use interesting lines as well.
